Open Sky Pilot

Open Sky Pilot is the first degree in the APPI Education System. The student learns how to install and control the wing on the ground (’Ground Skimming’) and have his/her first solo flight experience. At this level, the student is allowed to fly ONLY with radio communication and under Instructor’s supervision.

Prerequisites/ Course Contents/ Obligation

To enroll in a APPI Open Sky Pilot course, an individual must :

  1. Be a minimum age of 14 years old, with authorization of legal representative, and in accordance with local rules (Federation/ Civil Aviation/ Army, etc).
  2. Enroll in a minimum 5 days course with a certified instructor. This includes a minimum of 3 days ground handling.
  3. Complete a theoretical course on basic paragliding knowledge (five chapters).
  4. Complete the practical, analyze, technique and mental preparation stage 1

Training and Certification

APPI Solo Pilots candidates must satisfactorily complete all course performance requirements by following progressions. To apply for certification, the certifying APPI Instructor submits online a completed, signed Pilot Application to APPI website, along with the required photo and application fee. Upon approval of the application, APPI will issue an APPI Certification Card.  [1]  [2]

[1] Note: Open Sky Certification Card is only for students who are NOT completing a 15 days course. If the student is in progress, continuing his formation to APPI Solo Pilot, APPI will wait until the validation is completed, and the student will receive an APPI Solo Pilot Certification Card.
